Lancaster Royal Grammar School was endowed in 1472 and is one of the oldest state-funded schools in the country. We challenge the brightest pupils in the North West of England, along with boarders from further afield, to fulfill their potential. We are a day and boarding grammar school of around 1000 boys aged 11–18, including 170 boarders. We also have a thriving Sixth Form of over 300, which will welcome girls for the first time in September 2019. We have a long tradition of providing outstanding opportunities for boys to excel academically, as well as a national reputation for sporting and extra-curricular achievement. Students achieve consistently high academic standards (51% A*/A grades at A-level, and 36% 8/9 grades at GCSE in 2018). As a state school, education is free for all pupils. Boarding at Lancaster Royal Grammar School costs only about a third of the fees payable at independent schools. For these reasons, we believe we are an outstanding alternative to the independent sector.
